One of these three methods will allow you to stop screen recording on your MacBook or iMac. Click “Stop” in the Touch Bar or on the menu bar’s “Stop recording” icon:

Your Mac will stop recording your screen when you click the “Stop recording” icon.

Alternately, you can halt screen recording by hitting the keys command () + shift + ESC.

Tip

A tiny thumbnail will appear at the bottom right of the screen after the recording is complete. Without requiring any additional steps, the screen recording will be preserved. Click on the thumbnail to launch editing mode and cut or split the recording as desired.

Screen record on Mac before macOS Mojave

You can still record your Mac’s screen even if you still need to update to macOS Mojave or if your computer doesn’t support this version. A quick fix for this is available through the QuickTime Player.

Activate QuickTime Player. Under “File” in the menu bar, click “New Screen Recording”:

When you click on “New Screen Recording” from the QuickTime Player menu, you will activate screen recording on your Mac.

  1. Now, a popup titled “Screen Recording” will appear. To decide whether to screen record your Mac with audio and whether QuickTime Player should depict the mouse click in the recording as a black circle, use the small arrow next to the record button.

When you click on a screen region while holding down the red record button on QuickTime Player, your Mac will begin to be screen recorded. You can record your entire screen with this method.

  1. Click the red record button in QuickTime Player to capture the screen of your Mac. The full screen can then be recorded by clicking anywhere on the screen. Move the frame with your cursor and click the record button in that area if you only want to capture a portion of the screen.
